It all started in 2013, when I was 13 years old and going to see different doctors: from generalists and pediatricians, to dermatologists. I don’t have enough fingers on my hands to count the number of times I went to hospital for help answering what was happening to me.

My name is Linda and I’m 20 years old. I have a rare skin disease called Hydradenitis Suppurativa; H.S is a chronic skin condition that causes painful, acne-like bumps that form under the skin.
It all started in 2013, when I was 13 years old and going to see different doctors: from generalists and pediatricians, to dermatologists. I don’t have enough fingers on my hands to count the number of times I went to hospital for help answering what was happening to me, many times I would go because of the inexplicable pain; many times, I couldn’t sleep from pain or it would give me bad headaches. In June 2019, I was diagnosed with Hidradenitis Suppurativa.
At first it was something that I did not understand, I was very new to this disease since no one in my family or I who know had this disease. Since this process started it has been very difficult for me, I often wonder why I have to go through something like this. I have good days and bad days, often my mind takes over my thoughts and makes me discouraged, but I always try to be positive.
The biggest challenge has been that this disease has no cure, this is something that I unfortunately have to learn to live with and accept the reality that it has cost me a lot. My insecurity with my body has been quite difficult and trying to feel “normal” is even more so; however, behind all the negative there is always something positive, like for example, working on myself. Working on myself is something I have learned to do for myself many times now: I am the only one who understands my frustration, pain, and discomfort.
I feel like with my story I can help a lot of people my age not be afraid to tell their stories.
