Jose’s Story

I would like health insurance to support families and patients with a rare disease. I would like them to work with us and not against us.

Jose

My son Ruben was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in 2016. The diagnosis came when my son was 2 years old. My son didn’t have the development we’d seen in our first daughter. He didn’t walk and fall often, causing emergencies many times. Doctors said it was normal, but as parents, we knew something was wrong with our son. After fighting with many doctors, they finally approved genetic testing for my son, as they suspected he had autism. Once they arrived, the results showed that my son, in addition to autism, had Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Upon receiving a diagnosis of a disease I had never heard of, I had doctors tell me that my son’s disease had no cure and that it will lead to a short life.

As a parent, I was disappointed that I could not give my son the life he deserves like any other child. No parent wants to hear that their son is going to die, and I wish the doctors could have given this kind of news in a way that didn’t hurt so much. I want drugs approved, for the government to invest in research to give my child hope for a cure and a better quality of life.

I wish more people understood my son’s illness, I would like health insurance to support families and patients with a rare disease. I would like them to work with us and not against us. I would also like more information about the disease and doctors to speak our language.
