Each state must have a Drug Utilization Review (DUR) program to determine which drugs are covered by Medicaid and how those drugs are covered. In some states, the DUR Program is managed by a DUR Board, and in others, it is managed by a P&T Committee.
What is a DUR Board?
A Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Board is comprised of health care professionals and may include other stakeholders, varying by state. They are responsible for evaluating and providing recommendations for the Medicaid preferred drug list.
What is a P&T Committee?
Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committees evaluate the clinical use of medications. They develop policies for managing access to them and for ensuring effective drug use/administration.
