Growing up I was ill often, missed days at school, and seeing my friends. In the 12 years it took to diagnose me, I had endless doctor appointments, testing, and uncertainty. My name is Alex, and I’m 19 years old. I am living with an IRF2BPL disorder. Due to my rare diagnosis, I lost my independence and ability to communicate. I can no longer speak, swallow, move, or breathe on my own.
Songwriting gives me a voice, one I use differently. I write through my eyes. I create music to connect with people, to prove my disabilities do not define me. Through my song, the world can better understand my thoughts and feelings. Music is what helped me break through my frustration to find true joy. I hope people see me for my music, not for my diagnosis.
My dream is to visit Tennessee, the home of Country Music. I’m inspired by the music, history and stories of Country Music. I feel positive knowing I might visit Tennessee soon, as it motivated me to songwrite. Going there represents overcoming obstacles, being resilient, pursuing my dreams and goals. It will prove that I am way more than my IRF2BPL disorder.
