Usher Syndrome
As a deafblind advocate and proud white cane user living with Usher syndrome, I bring lived experience and perspective on accessibility, independence, and the power of meaningful connection. People are often surprised to learn I have less than 5° of central vision remaining. Through my wood burning art, I tell stories that reflect the rich diversity within the deaf and blind communities.
My pyrography practice transforms wood into narratives of resilience. I think of each burn mark as both artistic expression and an advocacy tool. “Imperfect Pathway” reflects how I navigate the world with Usher syndrome: balancing resilience, creativity, and independence while finding beauty and connection in unexpected places. Each piece requires the patience and adaptability that living with dual sensory loss has taught me, while also celebrating the unique perspectives that rare conditions bring to creative expression.
